Why Fundraising?

In an ideal world Parent / Student participation in Fundraising efforts goes a long way toward getting the extras that schools need to make them better places.  In the case of the Jersey City schools, fundraising is critical because the budgets have been so drastically cut.  You're all probably aware that the after-school programs and field trips have had to be cut.  There is also a shortage of supplies in the classrooms.

We all want our children to have more, and often we complain that they don't.  The fact is, that we, as parents, have a great deal of power in determining the type of school our children attend.  Caring breeds caring.  We can't expect the faculty to do the job alone.  Teachers often spend their own money buying supplies for their students.  If they are willing to go the extra mile, we should also be willing to help as much as we can.  After all, they are our children.

How we can help

Candy sales are great, and the kids and parents have all done a great job selling!   However, there are ways all parents can help by just doing things you all do every day.  Please visit the links in the red column on the left to find out how to earn money for your school, often by doing things we do everyday, like surfing the web, talking on the phone, shopping.  Many merchants are willing to donate money to the school when parents shop with them, buying things they would buy anyway. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us by e-mail or phone and we can explain it further.

Get your friends and family - and especially your employers - involved.  For instance, we can get money back on old cell phones and empty printer cartridges.   Maybe your company could donate them instead of throwing them away.  If you'd like a flyer to put up on your company bulletin board or a letter for your employer, please e-mail Maggie Dressler and I will e-mail the information to you.

We collect labels from Tyson Foods, Boxtops for Education, and Campbell's Soup (your neighbors and friends undoubtedly use these a lot).  For a complete list of labels to save, please visit the sponsors on the left, or e-mail me and I'll get a list out to you.

When we have fundraisers at the school, like bake sales and auctions, invite other your friends and neighbors.

The online malls on the left allow you to shop in on-line stores who in turn donate money back to the school.  For instance, if you're buying a new Dell computer for Christmas, go to one of these malls and use their link to the Dell site.  It won't cost you more, but you're school can get 15% of your purchase price.  It doesn't cost you anything, and a tax-writeoff for the company - and best of all your child benefits.   Smarterkids.com has great prices on unique presents for kids, and you can get a donation for the school by visting their site from America's Lemonade Stand.

Volunteer

It's nice to be needed - the parents' council and the school needs you.  Don't be afraid to offer your assistance to your child's teacher or other school staff.  If you have a special skill to offer or some experience get involved.  Involved parents make good schools.   If you'd like to be on a parents' council committee, please let us know.  We will be needing coordinators for our various fundraising activities.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Please contact me with any questions regarding our current Christmas catalog sale.   This is our largest fundraiser and can enable us to ensure that your children have field trips and other activities.

Eighth grade parents:  It is absolutely imperative that each child sell one box of candy this year so that this will defray their graduation costs, which keeps you from the added burden of paying for caps, gowns, yearbooks, the luncheon DJ, etc.

Kindergarden Parents:  If you have any ideas for what you would like at the end of year ceremony for your children, please start thinking about this now.  Last year they received t-shirts and treats.  We will have a special meeting regarding this.

As always, if you know of any other fundraising sources - please let us know by using our suggestion box below.    BS00852A.gif (2502 bytes)
